FROGS COMING TO GRAND OPENING

What is happening in the Village of North Canaan?

First an auction house… Then an antique center… New owners from Brooklyn of the bakery…

Now a pottery is going into a building that is sweetly remembered for all the flowers given at all those region one high school proms!

Could it be that the arts have found the town?

Not so fast. More likely it is about a few very astute property owners who have offered some very reasonable leases to some new and aspiring businesses. But whatever the reason the newest addition to the Village of North Canaan will be Funkware Pottery Studio, Classes & Gifts come July.

Ok, and maybe the arts have discovered the town...

While not giving up her small in-home studio on Trescott Hill Road, Funkware Pottery owner Joey Sage Jablonski has decided that now is the time to expand her pottery studio and class space while adding a large retail gifts space aswell in this former florist shop right next to the North Canaan Volunteer Fire Company.

This old florist shop was perfect with counters and shelves still installed, large areas for drying pots prior to glazing and even a rubber floor for easy cleaning. As Joey puts it, “The stars aligned, the rent was right, pottery orders were growing and I really needed more space to work and give classes. So I jumped in!”

Joey has never had the chance to operate a retail space before and is looking forward to “being out there”. While her claim to fame has been the "frog mug", she has primarily been selling these adorable mugs with a frog for the handle on a wholesale basis to gift shops throughout the country (most recently, Taos Blue in New Mexico).

Her frog mugs are an extremely popular item at the Mark Twain House shop where visitors take home a reminder of"The Jumping Frog of Calaveras County". She is hoping the new pottery studio location with the gift shop will be a welcome attraction to local shoppers looking for handmade pottery to give as gifts. She hopes that the location at the junction of two major travel routes should also help bring new pottery lovers to stop at her door.

Joey Sage Jablonski has been designing, formulating glazes and making wheel thrown pottery and sculptural clay works since 1993.   Located first in northeastern Connecticut where she started making pots after leaving a corporate career, she is now here in northwestern Connecticut. She started offering pottery classes over 17 years ago and has been sharing her experiences, expertise and her love of this ancient yet modern craft of making pottery with others through her friendly no-stress pottery classes ever since.

To Joey clay is a, “merging of form and spirit. Clay is the earth and imagination. The actual process of working in clay makes me feel as if I am touching the ground and touching the sky at the same time. I try to impart that feeling to others through my pottery and through my classes.”
